The 6 basic assumptions of the IFS model
Internal Family Systems (IFS) is an evidence-based treatment model that can address a wide range of clinical concerns. IFS model developed by Richard C. Schwartz in 1980s provides a framework for analysing subpersonalities or ego states. The model is based on 6 assumptions listed below.
The term “Parts” points to the experience of having shifting states of mind , each characterized by unique sets of thoughts, feelings and behaviours. When these states of mind exhibit recurring patterns or consistent thoughts or emotions, they are often referred as different parts of ourselves. This concept finds support in the IFS model of the psyche that harmonizes with the timeless wisdom of the Buddhist teachings on the nature of consciousness as explored by Thich Nhat Hanh (2001,2006).
The natural existence of Mind` s Plurality
Mind contains many sub-personalities within which is a universal, vital and rich phenomenon.
Every person has a “Self”
The “Self” represents the most spiritual dimension within the context of IFS and it represents who we really are. You can think about the “Self” as an orchestra conductor that gives instructions to the “Parts” to play their instruments and follow the conductor. The musicians or “Parts” in the orchestra have their own skills, role and consciousness that is separate from other “Parts”. Accessing the “Self-energy” occurs naturally when our internal Parts grant us access into the state of “Self-consciousness."
“Parts” are forced into roles they do not like
Protective parts can become preventive “managers” (role that is socially accepted) or reactive “firefighters” (role that is socially unaccepted) while protected parts become “exiles” charged with intense emotions (pain, trauma).
The intention of the “Parts” is positive although their roles are or can be extreme
For example “managers” can frequently control us by avoiding the pain from the “exiled” part, preventing it from blocking us or overwhelming us. For example our inner voice can say: “Never again” or “You are not worth it” in order to avoid the pain of rejection.
The “Parts” create relationships within us that are internal and dynamic just like a family and/or a group
These relationships can also be polarised or hierarchical.
Internal changes affect the external system and vice versa
This can sometimes leave consequences that influence the leadership of the person's “Self”.
The Goals of IFS therapy is to restore confidence in “Self´s “ leadership and release the burdened parts from their extreme roles. The aim is to achieve balance, harmony and integrity. The clients tend to feel that more energy is brough from the “Self” to external systems.

The 8 Characteristics of Self-Leadership
Self: The passive witness or active doer

The 6F s in IFS: steps that initiate the healing process
Find
Close your eyes and look for any sensations, images, thoughts that come to your mind. Who needs your attention right now? Find the “Part” in or around your body.
Focus
Turn your attention inward and focus on the “Part”. Give it space to exist in any way it desires.
Flesh Out
At this point the “Part” collects itself into precise bodily sensation, memories and it can start communicating by sending messages. Allow the “Part” to show a clear image of itself.
Feel Toward
What do you feel towards the revealed “Part”? It is important to check if other “Parts” appear at this stage and how they feel towards the targeted “Part”. You must feel if you have enough “Self” energy to move forward. If you do not have enough “Self-Consciousness” you might have to work with other “Parts” before proceeding to the targeted “Part”. In order to check how much “Self-Energy” you have, use The 8 Characteristics of Self-Leadership.
BeFriend
In the previous steps we have separated the “Parts” from the “Self” by opening an active communication. This step is about learning about the targeted “Part” and creating a relationship between the “Self” and the “Part”. This builds relationships internally in the system (“Self” to “Part”) and externally (“Part” to therapist).
Fear
In the final stage of the process we discover the fears or worries of the targeted “Part”. In this phase, we are able to detect signs of the exiled “part” along with the discomfort that was buried within so that it doesn't overwhelm the system. If all the steps have been correctly realised, the “Self” will be able to access and heal the targeted “Part”. This phase opens the doors for further exploration and work with the “exile”.
The 6Fs in iFS during a therapeutic session
Phase 1: Find, Focus and Flesh out is a phase of the process where we are becoming aware of the part.
Phase 2: Feel Toward is a phase where we check if the patient has enough “Self-Consciousness” to connect to the “Part”
Phase 3: Befriend and Fear is a phase of the process where we connect to the “Part” with the “Self-Energy”
Each individual navigates the 6Fs of IFS Therapy in their own unique pace and manner. While these steps offer a structured protocol the journey will manifest differently for each person. The key is to ensure that everyone feels safe and practises maximum compassion towards ourselves and our “Parts”.
